The soulful house compilation that kicked off the concept I now call barneysUNMIXEDtapes. Artists include Bucie, Black Coffee, Dennis Ferrer, Escort and Baba Stiltz.

This is the first UNMIXEDtape I ever compiled. Until this playlist, I had only ever used streaming services to find tracks I loved from before my bringthebeats days—essentially anything pre-2000. As a guy who always preferred the dance floor to the DJ booth, dance music lived within DJ sets, where the pros (still) put it together proper.

However, I started to dig for some house music classics and as one track led to another, this homage to two of my all-time favourite House DJs / producers, Dennis Ferrer and Black Coffee, started to take form. Around the same time, I noticed both Spotify and my sound system software (Sonos) has crossfade functionality and the UNMIXEDtape was born.

Future volumes of the HOUSEgroov series will feature selections more in tune with the progressive tip I’m used to in the bringthebeats underground. But there’s good reason I found myself kicking off the collection with house bombs like Dennis Ferrer’s remix of “The Cure & The Cause;” I love to dance.

The only downfall of hosting your own events, is you end up talking and working way more than you dance. When we want a night to lose ourselves on the dance floor we hide in a corner by the speaker at Revival or Sunnyside Pavilion. It started with milk. parties and then Garage 416. This sub-scene of the underground has always been a safe haven for us, so it’s only fitting we launch HOUSEbeats with this soulful tribute to some of the coolest people and dancers we’ve ever known.
