From singing the blues to stomping around the mosh pit, this is my interpretation of today’s rock hits. Artists include, Cage The Elephant, Jet, The Raconteurs, The Strokes and Spoon.

My homeboys back in Brantford have always kept me in the loop with the rock world. Too many my age feel, “the music these days isn’t worth a damn,” but not my mates. Depending on the mood, they’ll rewind time to revisit the good ole’ days, but they often take trips of modern rock discovery (usually with a few wobbly pops for inspiration).

These trips are regularly documented on late-night social media binges, which include vinyl pics and posts on a couple wicked cool Facebook groups. “Whatcha listenen to?” and “I love music… All kinds!!!” are treasure troves of rock-and-roll, new and old.

Many thanks to those pics and posts, and a few in-person sessions back home, I’ve started to curate playlists of what I believe are this century’s coolest rock hits. Excuse me if they’re a little mainstream and already old to you, I had almost 20 years of catching up to do.

It all begins with Cage The Elephant’sAin’t No Rest For The Wicked. It’s become abundantly clear there’s a strong influence of the blues in many of the new rock tunes I dig most. There’s something about that bluegrass style that greases my gears. “Hey Gyp” from The Raconteurs is another one that just hits the spot.

However, since I’ve dedicated this series to my Brantford roots, I had to include something that was mosh pit worthy. It’s not a proper show if the crew doesn’t spend some kick-ass time in the pit. So I hope the “Are You Gonna Be My Girl / Tick Tick Boom” combo satisfies that insanity. If not, we’ll have some punk rock in the Y2rock series sooner than later. You’ve been warned.

barney’s rock

This is where I stay in touch with my hometown roots. This won’t be my strongest genre of musical influence, but it’s one I still dig very much. Our world would be dull without the beats of a drum and rhythms of a guitar. Music is life and rock-and-rock is certainly the heart of it.

2Krock is a phenomenal experience of enlightenment after spending most of the new millennium focused on electronic sounds. I always knew there was a gold mine of stellar tunes to discover when the time was right and thank the rock gods it’s finally come!

listening pleasure

All barneysUNMIXEDtapes have an intended beginning and end. For optimal listening, it’s recommended you listen to the playlist in the order it’s programmed, NOT on shuffle.

The tracks are obviously UNMIXED, but set the crossfade feature in Spotify’s Playback settings to 10 seconds for smoother transitions. If you’re listening on Sonos, 10 seconds is the default.
