Composing all the RETRO series will be a difficult task. Not because there isn’t seemingly an infinite number of hits to choose from, because they’re obviously is. The challenge will be to not just choose all the obvious hits in an obvious order.
I won’t pretend to have a vast knowledge in the b-sides of rock-and-roll. I have more than enough friends who do, so I know I can’t compete with their passion. However, I do have a deep catalogue of a-sides cemented in my mind. The goal with RETROrock is to program these familiar songs in an unpredictable sequence and hopefully recreate the unforgettable feeling of hearing them again for the first time.
Without a doubt, choosing just one track from hit parades like this will also feel like an impossible task. There are just so many heartwarming memories imbedded within each song’s essence.
From the coolness of Cali, to the styles of London and back home to the Great White North, the selections you hear in v1 very much represent my coming of age. Nevertheless, it’s the melodic finale from an industrial rock act in Cleveland, Ohio that stands out from the rest.
I cannot tell you how many times I’ve lost my voice singing Filter’s “Take a Picture.” It’s one of those songs where you belt out the words even if you don’t remember them. With gems like this, it’s not what it says that’s important, it’s how it makes you feel. And I guarantee you’ll be all warm inside when this one ends.
barney’s rock
This is where I stay in touch with my hometown roots. This won’t be my strongest genre of musical influence, but it’s one I still dig very much. Our world would be dull without the beats of a drum and rhythms of a guitar. Music is life and rock-and-rock is certainly the heart of it.
RETROrock is the quintessential trip down memory lane. I revisit road trips, camping trips and straight-up trips from my 20’s in this series that has a little something for everyone. Together we venture deep into the rockin’ history of the 20th Century.
listening pleasure
All barneysUNMIXEDtapes have an intended beginning and end. For optimal listening, it’s recommended you listen to the playlist in the order it’s programmed, NOT on shuffle.
The tracks are obviously UNMIXED, but set the crossfade feature in Spotify’s Playback settings to 10 seconds for smoother transitions. If you’re listening on Sonos, 10 seconds is the default.
